Rousseau's "The Sleeping Gypsy" (1897) Key Ring

A classic artwork that has passed into the public domain and makes wonderful gifts and other products. The Sleeping Gypsy, or La Bohémienne endormie, is one of his most famous works. It depicts a lion inspecting or sniffing a woman asleep on the shore of a sea with mountains in the background. The simplicity of the backdrop accentuates the detail of the lion and the person. Rousseau was one of those unfortunate artist who gained respect only posthumously. Looked down upon because of his "Naive" or "Primitive" style, recognition grew after his death and his art has been quite influential. A French post-impressionist painter, he is best known for paintings depicting jungle scenes.
