St. Elizabeth (Santa Isabel) was the queen of Portugal during the reign of KIng Denis. Elizabeth was said to have had an unhappy marriage and defied her husband by helping the poor. Accused of giving food to the poor by her husband, it is said that she revealed that she was carrying roses and not bread as he claimed. This is noted as a miracle in the Catholic Church. St. Elizabeth is the Patron of Portugal and the Third Order of St. Francis.
