Saint John Portuguese Festa Neighbour

The Saint John Festa in Porto, (Festa de São João) Portugal, is a celebration that combines tradition, culture, and a profound sense of community. It's all about getting together and having fun. The festival's unique customs, historical significance, and lively atmosphere make it a must-experience event for anyone visiting Porto. There are many traditions to observe but one is to decorate the streets and windows. Another is eating grilled sardines, another is hitting people, even strangers, on the head with a hammer that makes a peculiar sound. And another is to buy basil. This illustration is part of a collection of four drawings that show four neighbours at the window, men and women of various ages, and refer to these traditions. The tiles adorn the wall of this house and in some of the illustrations, clothes are hung out to dry below windows. São João is celebrated on the 24th of June, with the night of the 23rd to the 24th being spent on the street in great excitement that involves the entire city.
