Built by Saladin in the late 12th century, it served as the seat of government and the residence of the rulers of Egypt for nearly 700 years. Today, it stands as one of Cairo's most iconic landmarks and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The dominant structure is the magnificent Mosque of Muhammad Ali, often called the Alabaster Mosque due to its stone cladding, which defines the citadel's skyline and offers panoramic views over the city of Cairo.
