Samaria Gorge, located in Crete, Greece, is one of Europe’s most spectacular natural wonders. Stretching 16 kilometres (10 miles) through the rugged White Mountains, it is one of the longest gorges in Europe and a popular hiking destination. The trail begins at Xyloskalo, at an elevation of 1,250 metres, and descends through a dramatic landscape of towering cliffs, pine forests, and ancient rock formations. The gorge narrows at the famous "Iron Gates" (Sideroportes), where the walls come as close as 3 metres (10 feet) apart while soaring up to 300 metres (984 feet) high. The hike ends at the coastal village of Agia Roumeli, where hikers often take a refreshing swim in the Libyan Sea. Beyond its breathtaking scenery, Samaria Gorge is rich in biodiversity and history. It is home to rare endemic species, including the wild Cretan goat (kri-kri), as well as diverse birdlife such as vultures and eagles.
