San Miguel Chapel Magnet

San Miguel chapel or San Miguel Mission, Santa Fe, NM This adobe church is one of the oldest worship places in North America built by Europeans. It was built in the first decades of the 17th century on top of a Native American graveyard used in the 13th century. The church was built by Tlaxcalan Indians who were allies of the Spanish against the Aztec Empire. The Tlaxcalan later became servants of the conquerors and many of them were relocated to Santa Fe. During the Pueblo Revolt the church was damaged and many of the Tlaxcalans died in the war around the church. After the Revolt it was rebuilt in the 18th century.
