The "Save the Butterflies" Collection is marketed in support of efforts to secure federal protection for the Monarch butterfly and other species that are also threatened by habitat loss. Monarch butterflies are native to Hawai'i and, in fact, a special mutant form--the White Monarch--seems to thrive only on the islands. The official State Butterfly emblem of Hawai'i is, however, the Kamehameha Butterfly, which lives nowhere else. Unable to find a public-domain photo of a Kamehameha Butterfly at the time of posting, we offer instead this photo of its preferred food plant, Mamaki. Protecting butterflies' food plants helps butterflies survive.
