The Amazon rainforest is on fire. Much of this not a natural wildfire disaster, but a man-made one. Ranchers and loggers are burning forest to create new pasture land for beef cattle or fields for agriculture. Clearing forest for farming is not new. It’s happened in many countries. What’s different in the Amazon is that this vast natural heritage generates 20% of the oxygen we all breathe, while absorbing massive amounts of carbon dioxide, the greenhouse gas. If the Amazon is destroyed, global warming will accelerate and millions of wild animals will lose their homes in the Amazon Jungle of South America.
