The term "Black Swan"originates from the philosophy of science and describes an outlier event that is mostly beyond everyday perception. With the financial crisis of 2007/08, this term has entered common language. It is often referred to as a "tail event"or "tail risk"because its occurrence lies at the edge of a standard statistical distribution curve. As such, it is mostly used to describe a negative event that derails the normal flow of things. The design on this product attempts to convey this threatening character, not so much as the "elephant in the room", but rather the "swan in the room".
