Self-Portrait (by Gwen John) Magnet

This design features a painting by Welsh artist Gwen John (born Gwendolen Mary John, 1876–1939), who worked in France for much of her career. It is a self-portrait showing the artist herself wearing a red shirt and enamel brooch while seated against a dark brown background. It is an intense and beautiful image. Gwen John trained at the Slade School of Art in London. It was there that she was taught fine art using traditional techniques, involving the laborious copying of Old Master paintings.
