One of George Seurat’s most famous paintings, Le Chahut is a charming depiction of a chorus line in a local Paris club at the turn of the twentietch century. Both men and women do the high kick as a chorus master waves a baton and a bass player stands with his back towards the viewer. With its democratic dance hall theme and aesthetic populism, Seurat’s Le Chahut is very reminiscent of the emerging art nouveau posters and advertisements that would flood the streets of Paris within the coming decade.
