Shanghai Classic Wrapping Paper
The fashion of Shanghai from 1910 to 1940 captures the essence of a transformative era, blending traditional Chinese elegance with modern Western influences to create a style that epitomised sophistication and cosmopolitan allure. During this golden age, the qipao, or cheongsam, evolved from its traditional loose-fitting form into a sleek, tailored silhouette that celebrated the feminine figure while maintaining its iconic mandarin collar and intricate detailing. Luxurious fabrics such as silk and satin were adorned with elaborate embroidery, floral motifs, or bold geometric patterns inspired by the Art Deco movement, showcasing a vibrant fusion of heritage and modernity.
Western fashion had a profound influence, introducing shorter hemlines, bobbed hairstyles, and accessories like pearl necklaces, cloche hats, and fur stoles, which were seamlessly paired with traditional garments. Men embraced this duality as well, transitioning from the classic changshan robes to tailored three-piece suits, often accessorised with pocket watches, leather shoes, and fedoras that reflected the sophistication of Shanghai’s urban elite. Hairstyles and makeup of the time further reflected this blend, with women donning finger waves and red lipstick to complement their attire, while men opted for slicked-back styles with a polished finish.
Rooted in cultural refinement yet forward-looking, Shanghai’s fashion of this era symbolised its status as a vibrant global hub. Whether seen in the glamour of eveningwear worn in jazz clubs or the practicality of daily attire, the designs from this period encapsulate a timeless elegance that continues to inspire modern aesthetics. This rich blend of tradition and modernity, elegance and innovation, makes the fashion of 1910 to 1940 Shanghai a captivating statement of cultural and artistic harmony.

I love this paper and it was large enough to put on the back of a glazed cabinet. It’s had lots of comments. I painted the interior to extend the image and it was very pleased with the result.

I really liked this product, the picture is lovely and the colours are really nice. I wanted it to up-cycle a writing bureau and I was concerned that the paper may be too thin. But it wasn't and it worked fine.
On the pictures I have uploaded the print looks a bit aged and not so vivid and new looking. As I wanted an aged patina but the actual print is clearer and the colours are brighter. The colour and prints are good.
