Silver Thaw Christmas Card

The Seattle area doesn't get much snow and ice, but sometimes we outdo ourselves. When our snow turned to an icy silver thaw this year, images like this one almost made up for the downed trees and branches. The dark stems and dried leaves of this lilac, encased in ice, curve up from the lower left corner of the photograph towards the upper right. Two shorter, iced stems, each ending in a dried bud, are on either side of the dried flower raceme in the centre. This consists of a thin, curved stick with tiny branches in pairs all along it, some ending in dried leaves. Their icy covering makes them look as if they have been reserved in glass. This image is against a blurred, grey-mottled background. I took this photo through my living room window. It will surely help me remember January 2012! Copyright Gail Storrs 2012.
