A crisp winter day was a good time to go on a quick ride, perhaps to visit grandma over the river and through the woods. The bells would be jingling along the way. Buggies cost as little as $25 to $50, and could easily be hitched and driven by untrained men women or children. This provided an all-weather passage within and between larger towns. Sleighbells on a buggy were for ornamental as well as practical purposes. Bells were put on horses as early as 800 B.C. They were said to bring good luck, warding off disease and injury, and also an indicator of the owner’s status. For practical purposes, the bells would warn pedestrians or others of the buggy’s approach.
