Soul of the Rose by John William Waterhouse, oil on canvas, 1903, is a vintage painting of a red-haired young woman deeply inhaling the scent of a garden rose which she grasps in her hand. The woman, with a classical, aquiline profile and tied back bright red hair and pearls, wears a brightly colourful, patterned kimono-like robe. She stands next to a large rose bush on a trellis by a garden wall. This painting is by one of the most famous masters of the English Pre-Raphaelite movement of the 19th century.
