Sprawl tees: Jamaica’s Funniest Tshirts. Sprawl means: "1. To sit or lie with the body and limbs spread out awkwardly. 2. To cause to spread out in a straggling or disordered fashion."
Kesi Gardner came up with an idea for a t-shirt line, a couple of days after graduating from New York’s prestigious art school, Pratt Institute, in 2001. She started working on ideas but with lack of funds was not able to make it happen.
Putting the idea on the back burner she moved back home to Jamaica after 7 years in 2002.
One day, after watching her coworker, produce his own line of shirts and selling them to his friends and family and thought if he could do it so could she.
The name of the line, Sprawl comes from the Jamaican phrase "Sprawl out”, which means to "easy, but also skin out, get wild and have a great time". “Tees” then replaced the “out”, which is short for t-shirt, a trendy name used nowadays.
Sprawl is a lifestyle brand. It's for people who don't take themselves too seriously. It's for people who like to lounge, relax and have a good time. The ideas are driven by the whole message tee phenomenon but made to be Jamaican inspired.
