Built on the site of a 6th-century monastery founded by St David, the patron saint of Wales, the current cathedral dates from the 12th century. Its construction using unique purple-coloured sandstone gives it a distinctive, beautiful appearance. The cathedral is tucked away in a grassy hollow, separate from the main city, and is the key destination for pilgrims, featuring its beautiful nave, high tower, and adjacent ornate Bishop's Palace ruins.
