St. Peter's Square Vatican City Postcard

St. Peter's Square, known as Piazza San Pietro in Italian, is a large plaza located in front of St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, the papal enclave within Rome, Italy. The square was designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini in the 17th century, under the direction of Pope Alexander VII. Its iconic elliptical design features massive Doric colonnades that sweep around the space, which are intended to represent the "maternal arms of Mother Church" reaching out to embrace the faithful. At the centre of the square stands an ancient Egyptian obelisk, which was brought to Rome by Emperor Caligula and moved to its current location in 1586. The square is a major gathering place for Catholic events and is capable of holding hundreds of thousands of people. It is a masterpiece of Baroque urban planning and architecture, chraacterised by its sense of openness, perspective, and grandeur.
