The story behind Noah's ark has a long twisted history. Many people placing their own agenda's to make the story more meaningful to them. The likelihood of the entire earth flooding and such is kind of low. However there is some truth to every story. What really happened was that the society of that time, polluted the earth so badly, that the smog actually created bad rain storms and that flooded out local populations. As for the ark, it transported goods, animals, live stock. In fact they were known to deliver exotic animals, as exotic as they were delicious. Being that they happen to be flying in a vessel that looked like a boat from afar, and that they did survive floods, the stories the told about their travels, simply became tales that were later recorded as miracles.
