After working with the homeless and near-homeless for years on the streets in both a poor medium-large city in the Southwestern United States and in an inner-city on the East Coast, I have come to see that the petty laws that have been created to make homelessness a virtual crime are forcing the homeless, people who in the begining have stories hardly different from mine or yours at our most difficult, into the criminal realm of existance faster than ever, giving them a record, throwing them in with a dangerous element, and making them give up any chance of living a straight, legal life often within weeks of living on the street.
