John Melhuish Strudwick (1849-1937) In the golden days. John Melhuish Strudwick was a Pre-Raphaelite painter of the Victorian era. He was inspired by Edward Burne-Jones and also worked as his studio assistant in the 1870s. Another source of inspiration was the lapidary technique from the Italian quattrocento. His paintings were done in a blend of Renaissance and mediaeval styles, with meticulous attention to detail, especially in his treatment of draperies and accessories, leading to a very small output. He employed rich, deep colours. This painting shows three beautiful young women that are making music together.
