Sumidero Canyon Postcard
Sumidero Canyon is a spectacular natural fissure in the earth's crust, with vertical walls that reach heights of up to 1,000 metres. Located in the state of Chiapas, the Grijalva River flows through the base of the canyon, which is now a protected national park. The canyon was formed around the same time as the Grand Canyon and is home to diverse wildlife, including crocodiles and spider monkeys.
The visual experience of Sumidero is defined by the towering limestone cliffs draped in hanging gardens and waterfalls, such as the famous 'Christmas Tree' formation. The water is a deep, tranquil green, reflecting the sky and the lush vegetation clinging to the rocks. The atmosphere is one of silent, prehistoric grandeur, where the scale of the cliffs makes everything else feel small.
