The closest land mass is that of mainland Ecuador, the country to which they belong. It is estimated that the islands were formed 8 million years ago as a result of tectonic activity on the seabed. The Galápagos Islands and its surrounding waters form an Ecuadorian province, a national park, and a biological marine reserve.
