Tail Spin - Art by Kathy Morrow Key Ring
Tail Spin - Original Art by Southwest Artist, Kathy Morrow This Spiny Lizard was crawling on our screened window one summer night. The dog's were going crazy trying to get to it, so I went out to see if I could escort it out to the desert behind our house. I took my camera a was sure that if I took a photo with the flash on that I would get only one and he would be gone. I was wrong about that. I was able to take lots of shots of him and he was hanging straight up and down. I thought it might be nice to get him into another position, but figured as soon as I touched him, he'd take off and run. Wrong again. I tapped his tail and he spun and looked straight at me and I settled in to take more photos. Later, I got him out into the desert, but I had to almost carry him. He was one laid back lizard! We have a family collection of Hopi baskets and I thought it would be nice to paint him as if he were a lizard design on a basket. In the medium of clay board, I paint the white clay coated board with watercolor. I painted the basic basket and the lizard. I used an exacto knife to begin cutting every fibre of the basket as if I were weaving the basket. The basket at that point was entirely white. Then I painted each fibre with oils making the design of the lizard in the basket. I thought as a basket weaver would about how the fibres would build the image. The realistic lizard inspired from my photos of the Spiny Lizard appears to have once been a design too. However, he has come to life and is leaving the basket. Notice that his tail is still a part of the basket design. Contact: Kathy Morrow (800) 234-5641
