Henrietta Maria of France was a Queen of England and Queen of Scotland through her married to King Charles I.
During the English civil war she fled to France, where she was welcomed by her family. She never saw Charles again, he was executed in 1649. The news deeply upset Henrietta Maria, and it also left her destitute and dependant on the French for financial support. The relationship between herself and some of her children, particularly the future King Charles II, became difficult - particularly due to her attempts to convert them to Catholicism.
After her son was restored to the throne she returned to England, but eventually her poor health meant she returned to France as the climate was believed to be better. She died there in 1669 and was buried in the Basilica of St Denis, rather than being returned to England for burial there.
