The first of the archangels, Michael is leader of the heavenly armies, protector of the Israelite people and conductor of the souls of the faithful departed to heaven. He appears in Scripture in the prophecy of Daniel, in the Epistle of Jude (where he contends with Satan over the dead body of Moses), and as the warrior leading the battle in Heaven against the dragon and his angels in the Book of Revelation. He is a saint with shrines associated with healing, flowing waters and high places, and is patron saint of police, soldiers, paratroopers, grocers, paramedics, and mariners.
