The Assumption of the Virgin Poster

The painting depicts the Virgin Mary being crowned and assumed into heaven, surrounded by angels and apostles. Mary is shown rising triumphantly, crowned by angels, bathed in radiant light. Below, the "Rosenwunder" (Miracle of the Roses) scene unfolds, where the tomb of Mary is opened and instead of a body, fragrant roses are found, a legend associated with her Assumption. The composition is dynamic and multi-figured, with apostles and putti reacting to the miraculous event. The youthful apostle shielding his eyes from the bright light is a motif Rubens developed in earlier sketches.
