The Belle of Louisville in Loiusville Kentucky Postcard
This postcard features the Belle of Louisville in Louisville, Kentucky. It was built in 1914 by James Rees & Sons Company, Pittsburgh, PA and named Idlewild. The Idlewild's Master Ben Winters' death to name the boat the Avalon was granted. In 1962, County Judge Executive Marlow Cook bought the Avalon for $34,000 and renamed it the Belle of Louisville. In 1988, The Belle was highlighted as the nation’s oldest and most authentic river steamboat at the first celebration of the steamboat era, Tall Stacks in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 2005, the Waterfront Development Corporation took over the operation of the Belle of Louisville on behalf of Louisville Metro. In 2014, the Belle of Louisville celebrated celebrated her 100th birthday with a 5-day gathering of her peers on Louisville's Waterfront.
