About This Design
The Bridesmaid (by John Everett Millais) Doormat
This design features a painting by the English artist Sir John Everett Millais, who was one of the founders of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. It shows a beautiful young woman with long flowing red hair falling down either side of her body. It shows an old English marriage traditions: Victorians believed that a bridesmaid would see a vision of her true love if she passed a piece of wedding cake through a ring nine times, a ritual that is depicted in Millais' painting. In addition, an orange blossom on the woman’s chest represents chastity. There is an antique-style sugar caster made of metal in the foreground, which some critics have seen as a symbol of the young woman's future lover. The original artwork was painted by John Everett Millais in 1851.
