The Espousal of the Virgin Poster

Joseph was espoused to the Blessed Virgin Mary in the presence of the High Priest, sometimes traditionally said to have been Mary's cousin-in-law Zacharias, husband of Elizabeth. The Virgin's parents, Joachim and Anne, appear at the upper left and right corners of the image, while S. Joseph bears the miraculously-flowering staff which marked him out among the Virgin's prospective suitors; the jewelled dove worked into his headdress also recalls the legend of his divinely-inspired election as the Virgin's most chaste spouse and protector in this world.
