The Inspiration of Saint Matthew, Caravaggio Jigsaw Puzzle

The Inspiration of Saint Matthew, Caravaggio Jigsaw Puzzle

The Inspiration of Saint Matthew (1602) is a painting by the Italian Baroque master Caravaggio. Commissioned by the French Cardinal Matteo Contarelli, the canvas hangs in Contarelli chapel altar in the church of the French congregation San Luigi dei Francesi in Rome, Italy. It is one of three Caravaggio canvases in the chapel: hanging between the larger earlier canvases of The Martyrdom of Saint Matthew, and The Calling of Saint Matthew. This was not an easy commission for Caravaggio, and at least two of the three paintings had to be either replaced or repainted to satisfy his patron, the Cardinal Del Monte. It is instructive to compare the two versions of the latter painting to see how provocative and controversial Caravaggio was in his time. Unfortunately, the first, rejected, version of this theme was destroyed in World War II, and we only have black and white and enhanced colour reproductions. In the first version, Saint Matthew and the Angel, the angel stands close to Matthew the Evangelist personal space and engages in what appears more direct intervention than divine inspiration. The angel intertwines with the old man, apparently whispering inspiration into his ear. The rejected painting can be compared to the earlier Caravaggio canvas of the Rest on the Flight into Egypt. In the work featured on the altar, the angel belongs to an aerial and sublime dimension, enveloped in an encircling rippled sheet. The restless Matthew leans to work, as the angel enumerates for him the work to come. All is darkness but for the two large figures. Matthew appears to have rushed to his desk, his stool teetering into our space. His expression is sober. It is thought the contemporary styles of Caravaggio and Carracci were at odds with each other, and non overlapping. In this light it is instructive to compare and contrast a similar canvas, by Carracci's pupil, Giovanni Lanfranco presently in Piacenza as well as a painting on a similar theme by Rembrandt.

I got this image in 110 pieces as I cannot commit to large puzzles. This one took me about an hour and was fairly easy. Perhaps 252 pieces would have better suited me for a little more complexity. This is not my favourite sugar skull as I prefer more girly colours like hot pink, reds and purples but I enjoyed doing this one. There is a lot of detail in the image and it was interesting to do. I don't think I will buy the larger puzzle count just because there are other sugar skull images that I much prefer. Again very good quality puzzle and durable storage box that fits very well on small bookcase. The image was well positioned on this one so who ever printed this one got it pretty bang on.

We are pleased with the jigsaw itself. However we are disappointed the box is far bigger than the jigsaw and not the kind of storage box we expected i.e. Ravensburger standard; rather it's a postage box and not very sturdy at that. Given it cost £18 + pp we did expect more. The image quality is good. The pieces are rather thin and flimsy.

I like puzzles but can't commit to thousands of pieces. I chose this one in 110 pieces because I wanted a challenge that could be completed in a few hours. This one took approx 3.5 hours to complete. The image is pretty uniform throughout so may seem daunting but some of the jigsaw pieces are quite unique which helps. You definitely need a good eye for detail and this puzzle is challenging and engaging giving the satisfaction of completion after a relatively short commitment of time. I do not like thousands of pieces because I don't have the time or motivation to keep going back to a puzzle which needs to be stored and moved and this can result in a loss of pieces. The box the puzzle is supplied in is good quality and will store the puzzle safely for a long time. The box also fits on one of my small bookcase so storage is very easy. The puzzle print is slightly smaller than the image on the box and this makes orientation of the puzzle harder. The image is of really good quality though and I'm happy with the quality of this aspect.
