The Meeting on the Turret Stairs (by F.W. Burton) Card
This design features a painting by the Irish Victorian painter Sir Frederic William Burton (1816–1900), who became the third director of the National Gallery in London, England. The painting is inspired by an old Danish ballad, which tells the tragic story of Hellelil, a young noblewoman, and Hildebrand, her bodyguard and secret lover. Burton masterfully depicts the couple in a secret, stolen embrace on a narrow, winding stone staircase. The scene is infused with a sense of urgency and inevitability, as if the lovers know that this moment may be their last. The composition is vertical, with the lovers positioned on a tight spiral of the turret stairs, emphasising the closeness and the confined space that heightens the emotional intensity of the scene. Hellelil is shown ascending the turret stairs, her head turned slightly towards Hildebrand, who stands above her. She is dressed in a flowing, richly adorned gown of deep blue with golden embroidery, symbolising her noble status and the formality that constrains her life. Her golden hair cascades in a long pigtail down her back, adding to her ethereal presence. Hellelil's face, illuminated by soft light, is filled with sorrow and a sense of inevitable loss. Hildebrand tenderly clasps her hand between his, as an expression of the deep connection and the desperation of their forbidden love. Hildebrand, who stands below her on the stairs, is clad in a suit of armour, signifying his role as her protector. His face, partially obscured, conveys the melancholy of a man caught between duty and love. The armour also foreshadows the violence and tragedy that will ultimately tear the lovers apart. Despite the constraints of their situation, the lovers' touch is gentle and full of unspoken emotion. The setting of the turret stairs, with its cold, grey stone, contrasts sharply with the warmth of their attire and their shared moment, emphasising the isolation and the insurmountable barriers they face. The narrowness of the stairwell intensifies the feeling of confinement, as though they are trapped by fate and the rigid social structures of their time. Burton’s delicate use of light highlights the emotional depth of the scene, particularly in the way it gently illuminates Hellelil’s face and their clasped hands. The interplay of light and shadow enhances the mood of the painting, underscoring the bittersweet nature of their farewell. "The Meeting on the Turret Stairs" is a masterful portrayal of doomed love, infused with emotional intensity and narrative richness. Burton's attention to detail, his skilful composition, and his ability to convey the profound emotions of his characters make this painting a timeless depiction of love, loss and the inexorable pull of fate. The original artwork was painted by Frederic William Burton in 1864.

I visited the Watts Gallery earlier this year which was one of our best family days out ever, what a talent Watts was and his wife come to that. The image is perfect for a romantic occasion though I made the mistake of thinking it was a greeting card when in fact it is a postcard - my mistake but easily happens.
Took a little while to print and to be sent from overseas I think. Good quality card and printing.

The artwork and paper quality are good BUT it is only a card and not a bi-fold blank card as I had expected. It was my mistake as I hadn't noticed when ordering. However I think that a single page card would be be very limiting to send to a 90 year old. The quality was excellent.
