The Portuguese Rooster of Barcelos

The Portuguese Rooster of Barcelos is the unofficial symbol of Portugal and one of its most recognisable icons. Inspired by an old pilgrim’s legend, the clay figurines were first just a powerful symbol of truth and justice. From the 1950s onwards the Portuguese Barcelos Rooster became a symbol of national tourism propaganda efforts and Portuguese culture. The rooster is depicted in tourist posters to promote Portugal’s folklore, traditions, landscapes, and also the hospitality and simple way of life of the Portuguese. Today it remains a source of inspiration for many Portuguese artisans and graphic artists.
