The Portuguese Rooster of Barcelos is the unofficial symbol of Portugal and one of its most recognisable icons. Inspired by an old pilgrim’s legend, the clay figurines were first just a powerful symbol of truth and justice. From the 1950s onwards the Portuguese Barcelos Rooster became a symbol of national tourism propaganda efforts and Portuguese culture.
