This postcard features the painting The Starry Night by Vicent Van Gogh. It is an oil on canvas and it was painted in 1889. The story of Vincent Van Gogh cutting off his ear after a fight with his friend Paul Gauguin is a well-known one and it happened in 1888. After that occurred, and in keeping with his reputation as a crazy artist, he was committed to a mental health asylum in Arles, France. It is thought that he painted The Starry Night while in the asylum and that the painting is the view that he had from his window.
