Ten American Painters , The Ten is an association of ten American Impressionist painters of the nineteenth century who resigned in late 1897 of the League of American artists to protest against the commercialism of their exhibitions and their circus atmosphere. The Company has posted twenty earlier of the National Academy of aesthetics under the leadership of Mary Cassatt , James Whistler, Thomas Eakins and Winslow Homer . The Ten are: Childe Hassam , Julian Alden Weir , John Henry Twachtman , Robert Reid , Willard Metcalf , Frank Weston Benson , Edmund Charles Tarbell , Thomas Wilmer Dewing , Joseph DeCamp and Edward Simmons .
