The Virgin Mary and Christ Pietà by Michelangelo Magnet

The Virgin Mary and Christ Pietà by Michelangelo Magnet

The Virgin Mary and Christ Pietà by Michelangelo magnet ... A perfect gift for Easter or any time. Almost has a 3-D appearance. The amazing sculpture in marble by Michelangelo. How could anyone carve this from solid rock? (The following is copied and pasted from an online information site) The Pietà (Italian: [pjeˈta]; English: "The Piety"; 1498–1499) is a work of Renaissance sculpture by Michelangelo Buonarroti, housed in St. Peter's Basilica, Vatican City. It is the first of a number of works of the same theme by the artist. The statue was commissioned for the French Cardinal Jean de Bilhères, who was a representative in Rome. The sculpture, in Carrara marble, was made for the cardinal's funeral monument, but was moved to its current location, the first chapel on the north side of the entrance of the basilica, in the 18th century.[1] It is the only piece Michelangelo ever signed. It is also the only known sculpture created by a prominent name from the Renaissance era that was installed in St. Peter's Basilica that was accepted by the Chapter of St. Peter. [2] This famous work of art depicts the body of Jesus on the lap of his mother Mary after the Crucifixion. The theme is of Northern origin.[when defined as?] Michelangelo's interpretation of the Pietà is unprecedented in Italian sculpture.[3] It is an important work as it balances the Renaissance ideals of classical beauty with naturalism. Perfect for Easter or any time. This was sculpted by Michelangelo (6 March 1475 – 18 February 1564) 1498-1499 from marble. A truly genius artist ... he famously wrote romantic love filled poetry to a particular younger man when Michelangelo was age 57 and the younger man, Tommaso dei Cavalieri (c. 1509–1587), was 23 years old when Michelangelo met him in 1532. Michelangelo was a great artist, left handed, and gay ... and lived when Leonardo da Vinci was also working who also was a great artist, left handed, and gay. The Church, which was anti-gay nonetheless employed them for their great genius talents.
