The figure wears a long, bright red patterned dress as she listens intently. The subject is taken from stories from ancient Greek and Babylonian mythology of young star-crossed lovers whose families forbid them to wed and could only speak in whispers through the walls of their houses. The Pre-Raphaelite artist Waterhouse paints a timeless and memorable image of an archetype of the forlorn young lady who yearns to be with her betrothed.
