"Shu" (蜀) or Shu Han (蜀漢) was one of the three major states that competed for supremacy over China in the Three Kingdoms period, based in the area around present-day Sichuan and Chongqing which was historically known as "Shu", founded by Liu Bei, who claimed himself as the descendants of the Han Dynasty, and thus named his state "Han" as he considered it the legitimate successor to the Han dynasty. The Three Kingdoms (220 - 280 AD) was the tripartite division of China between the states of Wei, Shu, and Wu. It started with the end of the Han dynasty and was followed by the Jin dynasty. The Three Kingdoms period is one of the bloodiest in Chinese history, 60 years of war has cause the population of China greatly declined from over 50 millions to around 2 millions when the Jin Dynasty was founded, which was only a fraction of the population before the great devision of China.
