Tishomingo State Park Mississippi Travel Postcard

Tishomingo State Park in northeastern Mississippi sits in the foothills of the Appalachians and offers scenery rare for the state — steep cliffs, sandstone outcrops, waterfalls, rocky creeks, and lush woodlands. It’s especially known for the Bear Creek Canyon and the old swinging footbridge that spans Pennington Creek, structures built in part by CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) crews in the 1930s. The land has deep history: Paleo-Indians lived there thousands of years ago, and it’s named for Chief Tishomingo of the Chickasaw Nation. For recreation, there are ~13 miles of hiking trails (easy to moderate difficulty), canoe float trips on Bear Creek, rock climbing (permit required), fishing in Haynes Lake, and good options for staying overnight: cabins, primitive campsites, RV hookups, and group camping. Amenities include picnic shelters, disc golf courses, a swimming pool, and visitor centre exhibits on natural and cultural history.
