Tokyo Streetlights: Kuramae Bridge Postcard

Kuramaebashi-dori, Kuramae Bridge - Kuramae means "in front of the warehouse". During the Edo era, the area was the site of more than sixty granaries that stored rice levied as tax from the provinces of the two hundred daimyo (feudal lords). Kuramae Bridge, which spans the Sumida River, was built in 1927 and features decorative motifs of boats and sumo wrestlers. Kuramae Bridge is 173 metres in length and has three arches and six traffic lanes. The bridge is painted yellow, a colour some sources suggest matches that of rice chaff. Although the geometric design of the streetlights on the bridge seems influenced by art deco, the lights are actually modern (2019).
