Tomb of Askia Mali Postcard

The Tomb of Askia is a dramatic 17-metre-high pyramidal mud-brick structure built in 1495 by Askia Mohamed, the emperor of the Songhai Empire, in his capital of Gao. Reflecting the architectural brilliance of the West African Sahel, the tomb is spiked with permanent wooden scaffolding (toron) that projects from the mud walls, serving both a structural purpose and acting as a built-in ladder for annual replastering. It stands as a powerful monument to the power and wealth of the Songhai Empire, which flourished on the trans-Saharan trade of gold and salt. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, the complex includes the pyramidal tomb, two flat-roofed mosque buildings, the mosque cemetery, and an open-air assembly ground. It represents an extraordinary fusion of traditional Islamic architectural styles with indigenous Sahelian earthen building techniques. The site continues to serve as an active centre of worship and community life in Gao, embodying the cultural continuity and architectural heritage of Mali.
