Traditional Rooster of Portugal in black Ceramic Ornament
The Portuguese folks in the Barcelos area have molded clay animals, especially roosters, since ancient times. But between 1940 and 1960, the Barcelos rooster became a symbol of Portuguese tourism. After 1960, it began to be associated with the legend of the pilgrim saved from the gallows. The Barcelos rooster evolved and became a symbol of identity, first of Barcelos and then of Portugal. In the 21st century, the rooster was rediscovered by tourists worldwide and by artists from the most varied areas.
The rooster went from unknown to national star. In September 1935, Portugal was represented in Geneva with an exhibition of Popular Art, where the Galo de Barcelos had its international premiere. From that moment on, the rooster has always received praise and awards in various places around the world. The first roosters were small objects but today there are roosters of all sizes. The black color appeared only in the 1950s due to the scarcity of colored ink. The most colorful roosters appeared only in the '30s, already in the 20th century. The first roosters were whistles or toothpick holders. Today we find decorative roosters in ceramics, some are even pieces of modern art or monuments. There is no tourist who visits Portugal who does not take home a rooster in their suitcase! Roosters are present in all kinds of souvenirs, keyrings, magnets, bags, towels, and t-shirts.
It was from 1950 onwards that the Barcelos rooster that the world knows today became popular. It looks modern and elegant, with red hearts, a serrated tail, and a large crest. The painted red hearts are inspired by embroidery and jewelry from Minho. The rooster is associated with a legend. The miracle of saving a falsely accused pilgrim is attributed to Saint James ( São Tiago, in Portuguese) and is territorially linked to the road to Santiago of Compostela. In the Archaeological Museum of Barcelos there is a 14th-century granite cross alluding to this legend, representing the aforementioned “miracle”. Art, history, legend, and religion come together in the figure of the Portuguese Rooster, contributing to making it fascinating and an object of worship among nationals and foreigners. This black rooster with floral and colorful decorations will appeal to Portuguese and Portuguese descendants, tourists and travelers, and all those who appreciate popular culture. It makes a good birthday present for a special friend. The Portuguese Rooster of Luck fills our home with joy with its simplicity and vibrant colors.
