Republic of Trinidad and Tobago The flag of Trinidad and Tobago consists of a red base with an off centred black stripe originating in the top left corner and running across the flag. The black stripe is bordered on both sides with a thin white stripe. The Meaning of the Trinidad and Tobago flag is that the red base is the vigour of the land and the friendliness and courage of its people, and the sun. The black represents the unity and strength of the people, as well as the natural wealth of the country. The white stripe represents the surrounding sea and its purity and equality of all people under the sun. Together, the colours represent earth, water and fire, which connect the nation’s people to the past, present and future. Trinidad and Tobago flag was adopted on 31st August 1962 when the island gained independence from Britain.
