The bridge used to be functioning as a bridge literally but also important water path for people living around the area, water is used for their living and their crop making,rice mostly important. The bridge cost a lot to get repaired as workable as before.

平成28年熊本地震により、熊本県山都町にある国指定重要文化財「通潤橋」は、橋上にある通水石管の継目から著しい漏水が生じるなど、大きな被害を受けました。通潤橋は、農業用水路としての機能を維持している「生きている文化財」であり、通常時より通水石管の目地に伝統的な漆喰を用いた維持管理作業が行われています。
