ukiyoe - 和漢百物語 No.14 - 下部筆助 - Postcard

"和漢百物語 (Wakan hyaku monogatari)“ is a series based on Japanese and Chinese horror stories and heroic anecdotes by 月岡芳年 (Tsukioka Yoshitoshi). ＊No.14 下部筆助（shimobe Fudesuke / しもべ ふですけ） 飯沼勝五郎 (Iinuma Katsugoro), whose brother was killed, travels with his wife, 初花 (Hatsuka), in search of the enemy, but both his legs become crippled due to illness. His wife, Hatsuhana, is killed by the enemy in 箱根 (Hakone). However, despite becoming the soul of the dead, she enters a waterfall to practice asceticism and pray for her husband's healing. Her prayers are answered, Katsugoro's leg is healed, and she successfully defeats her enemy. In this ukiyoe, 下部筆助 (Shimobe Fudesuke) is the loyal retainer of Hatsune's brother-in-law, and he is looking at Hatsune who has become the soul of the dead. ＊I used data from the National Diet Library's Digital Collection and made colour corrections. ＊Any of my designs can be transferred to over a thousand other items and adjust the design to fit the product if you needed.
