"Uncle Tom Cereal" Coffee Mug

One-pound box, Prepared by Uncle Tom Cereal Co., Marshalltown, Iowa. Circa. 1915. After Harriet Beecher Stowe's 1853 novel, "Uncle Tom's Cabin," was published, American advertisers soon jumped on the bandwagon by incorporation stereotypical 'Uncle Tom' caricatures portraying black men as faithful, happily submissive servants. The Tom caricature, like the Mammy caricature, was born in ante-bellum America in the defence of slavery, neither of which was truthful, but just a new way of utilising black folks to generate money for white commercialism.
