UNESCO WHS Serie - Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto (Kyoto, Uji and Otsu Cities) - 古都京都の文化財（京都市、宇治市、大津市） - Ryoan-ji - 龍安寺 - Built in A.D. 794 on the model of the capitals of ancient China, Kyoto was the imperial capital of Japan from its foundation until the middle of the 19th century. As the centre of Japanese culture for more than 1‘000 years, Kyoto illustrates the development of Japanese wooden architecture, particularly religious architecture, and the art of Japanese gardens. The site contains 17 Historic locations. Ryōan-ji (The Temple of the Dragon at Peace), is a Zen temple located in Ukyō-ku, northwest Kyoto. It belongs to the Myōshin-ji school of the Rinzai branch of Zen Buddhism. The Ryōan-ji garden is considered one of the finest surviving examples of kare-sansui (dry landscape), a refined type of Japanese Zen temple garden design generally featuring distinctive larger rock formations arranged amidst a sweep of smooth pebbles (small, carefully selected polished river rocks) raked into linear patterns that facilitate meditation.
