UNESCO WHS Serie - Waterton Glacier International Peace Park - Glacier National Park - Avalanche Lake - In 1932 Waterton Lakes National Park (Alberta, Canada) was combined with the Glacier National Park (Montana, United States) to form the world's first International Peace Park. Situated on the border between the two countries and offering outstanding scenery, the park is exceptionally rich in plant and mammal species as well as prairie, forest, and alpine and glacial features. Glacier National Park encompasses more than 1 million acres (4'000 km2) and includes parts of two mountain ranges, more than 130 named lakes, more than 1'000 different species of plants and hundreds of species of animals. The Park has almost all its original native plant and animal species. Avalanche Lake is southwest of Bearhat Mountain and receives meltwater from Sperry Glacier. It is a 2 miles (3.2 km) hike from the trailhead along the Trail of the Cedars. When measured in August 1910, the maximum depth of the lake was 63 feet near the upper end. Though most lakes of similar size and elevation in Glacier National Park do not have fish, Avalanche Lake is a popular fishing location among anglers.
