The Rideau Canal, a monumental early 19th-century construction covering 202 km of the Rideau and Cataraqui rivers from Ottawa south to Kingston Harbour on Lake Ontario, was built primarily for strategic military purposes at a time when Great Britain and the United States vied for control of the region. Shoal Tower, originally known as Victoria Tower, is a Martello tower located in the harbour of Kingston. It is one of four such towers built in the 1840s to protect Kingston's harbour and the entrance to the Rideau Canal.

The Zazzle cards are always beautifully done and these were no exception. I love these cards because, after over 70 years of collecting, I can fill in the gaps. I especially like the ones of UNESCO heritage sites, some of which are fairly obscure, and which have both photos and texts on them.
